Rock, Funk, & Fusion

This diverse course will take students on a whirlwind sonic tour of "high octane" rock, funk and fusion guitar styles! Rock, Funk, and Fusion features expert instruction from renowned guitar educator, Crown veteran and "World Class Guitarist" James Hogan along with some very special guest artists (TBA this Spring!). Tons of licks, tricks and techniques will be covered in class and students will learn to apply all of the new information they'll learn in a laid back and friendly environment. If you're a fan of rock, funk, fusion, and groove based guitar styles, you'll absolutely love this class! There will be plenty of time for jamming in class too and multiple performance opportunities or students throughout the week at the Crown Guitar Festival.

Faculty Bio

James Hogan is known by many as a “world class” guitarist and regarded highly by his peers. Which holds true as he is in constant demand as a touring sideman, studio musician and educator. James was a senior instructor at The National Guitar Workshop's in Florida, Connecticut, Nashville, Washington D.C. and SUNY Purchase campuses from 1998-2012. James Hogan is currently an Adjunct Professor of Guitar at The University Of North Florida and Florida State College in Jacksonville, FL where he has been on staff since 2000.

How high can your next level of playing be? What is missing in your approach to technique and expressivity in your performances? In this intensive course for intermediate and advanced students, you will work with none other than acclaimed chamber artists Solo Duo (Matteo Mela and Lorenzo Micheli) as returning faculty, alongside guitarist and pedagogue Lynn McGrath to become aware of just how high your next level can be.

Faculty Bio

Dr. Lynn McGrath has performed, lectured, and adjudicated on four continents. Having taken part in international festivals in Montenegro, Poland, Italy and the US, she has also toured in Canada, the UK, Peru, and New Zealand, where she performed on New Zealand National Public Radio. She has collaborated with larger groups as a soloist with the Orchestra of Northern New York, with the Albuquerque-based choir Quintessence, on Santa Fe Opera’s 2014 season, and is a member of the acclaimed Tantalus Guitar Quartet, praised for their “perfect ensemble”(Reinischer Post, Germany).

After receiving degrees in Spanish Language and Literature as well as Education, she studied music at the Crane School of Music, SUNY Potsdam (where she later taught as a full-time instructor) and earned a MM and DMA from the University of Southern California. In Fall of 2017, Dr. Lynn McGrath was appointed as Senior Guitar Instructor at the Eastman Community Music School, Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York.

Americana/Fingerstyle, Past, Present and Future with Doug Smith and special guests Justin Townes Earle and Brooks Robertson. This course is designed for the intermediate guitarist, whether you're interested in instrumental guitar or are a vocalist looking to improve your guitar skills. We'll take a look at licks and songs from past classics, look at the styles of present pickers like Justin Townes Earle, and learn how to arrange and adapt songs by ear, all to help you find your own "voice" on the guitar.

Faculty Bio

Grammy winning guitarist and 2006 International Fingerstyle Guitar Champion, Doug Smith, has been performing and teaching for nearly 40 years. His inspirations range from Chet Atkins, Michael Hedges and Tommy Emmanuel to Paul Simon and James Taylor. His enthusiastic teaching style has made him a workshop favorite all over the country. Doug has been with the Crown Guitar Workshop and Festival since its birth. 

The Improvising Jazz Guitarist

The Improvising Jazz Guitarist with Mark Dziuba and Special Guests, Pat Martino Trio. Along with exploring the "Nature of the Guitar", this class will focus on improvisational approaches and how to practice improvising. Do not miss this opportunity to really get inside the music and become a more informed and expressive improviser.

Faculty Bio

Mark Dziuba has been a guitarist, improviser and composer for most of his life, having performed with a who’s who of Jazz, Blues, Rock and Bluegrass musicians internationally.  His style combines cutting edge eclecticism with sublime traditions which often defies description, paired with a unique voice that invites the listener deep inside for a provoking musical experience. Mark has taught and performed at workshops for nearly 40 years, including internationally acclaimed National Guitar Workshop for 25 years and Crown of the Continent Guitar Festival since its birth. He is currently a tenured professor at the State University of New York at New Paltz directing the Music Department’s Jazz Studies program. 

Songs That Move: from the Page to the Stage

In this singer/songwriter course we will dive into what makes songs move people, by studying song structure, rhyme schemes, prosody, and metaphor. We’ll talk about taking our songs to the stage and performance techniques for how to connect with an audience.

Faculty Bio

While best known for her stop-you-in-your-tracks voice, Liz has steadily developed a reputation as an accomplished songwriter, crafting intimately personal portraits through her music. She's taken home top prizes at some of the most prestigious songwriting competitions in the country, including the BMI John Lennon Songwriting Scholarship Competition, the International Acoustic Music Awards and the Rocky Mountain Folk Fest Songwriting Competition. 

Montana’s Most Dangerous Band - Blues & Rock

Come and up your skills while developing the skills and techniques to be a gigging musician. This blues-rock class will focus on the application of skills and will spend less time on the theory. This course will be featured as Crown’s official pit-band.

Faculty Bio

Dennis McCumber has been a guitar instructor and performer for more than 20 years, holding a Bachelor’s degree in music education from The College of Saint Rose. Performing regularly in the New York City area solo, with various rock, blues, and funk bands, he's also dedicated 17 years to teaching middle school in the Bronx. He was an instructor at the National Guitar Workshop for more then 10 years, where he taught Blues, Funk, and Rock. His students have performed for Carlos Santana, Dr Dre, Bruce Springsteen and Yoko Ono.  Dennis has performed and taught alongside such greats as Robben Ford, Matt Schofield and Ronnie Earl and performed at the Chicago Blues festival Main stage, Hard Rock Café on Beale street in Memphis, Buddy Guy’s club “Legends” in Chicago.
